Opponents of freedom organize poorly-attended gathering

February 7th, 2012

Opponents of the freedom to marry, led by State Representative David Bates, held a gathering today in Concord in support of HB 437, the divisive legislation that would repeal marriage equality.

Not surprisingly, the rally was poorly attended. Directly following Bates’ event, Sean Owen, a member of our Leadership Council, released this statement on behalf of New Hampshire Republicans for Freedom and Equality:

“Despite mailings, robo calls and the desperate pleas from the National Organization for Marriage in Washington, DC, Rep. Bates couldn’t even muster up a respectable crowd.  It’s time for this obsession to end.  The marriage equality law is popular, people don’t want it repealed.  Yet Rep. Bates continues to waste everyone’s time and attention – which should be focused on real issues and real problems.  Let’s stop this charade now and get back to the business of New Hampshire.”

Contrast today’s less-than-successful rally by our opponents with our grassroots campaign to defend the freedom to marry, and you’ll see what kind of momentum supermajority support around the state can create! Thousands of Granite Staters have taken action with our campaign and our field operations are in full swing, operating phone banks nearly every day across the state. 62% of New Hampshire supports marriage equality and our volunteers are working every day to ensure that state legislators are getting the message.
